Changing domicile? Have wings & ring, will travel…

A Guernseyman has made a Crapaud very happy this evening.

Today, I went looking for herring gull Yellow OA5, who we have blogged about several times before and we last observed on 30 April 2013…

Arriving at Le Grouet, I immediately spotted a healthy looking male herring gull bearing a white ring 9HV5 ~ paired up and acting as if he owned the place. After taking a picture and looking for any sign of a yellow ring on other birds for fifteen minutes, I headed off to La Corbière and wondered if the brutal storms of Winter 2013/14 had taken Yellow OA5 to the great herring shoals in the sky…

On returning home, I notified Paul Veron of Guernsey Gulls of White 9HV5′s presence at Le Grouet, and Yellow OA5′s absence by email. In his prompt reply, Paul advised that I would find a “very nice surprise” in White 9HV5′s updated life history. Claimed by Guernsey on 21 July 2013, to be sixteen years old on 23 June 2014 ~ way to go!

Given the current plight of so many seabirds, a happy day indeed…
